Facelift (Rhytidectomy)

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that improves visible signs of aging in the face and neck, such as:

  • Relaxation of the skin of the face causing sagging

  • Deepening of the fold lines between the nose and corner of the mouth

  • Fat that has fallen or has disappeared

  • Jowls developing in the cheeks and jaw

  • Loose skin and excess fat of the neck that can appear as a double chin or "turkey neck"

Procedure Time

Initial Healing: 2 weeks

Final Results: 2 - 3 months

Recovery Time

10 - 14 days

  • Take certain medications or adjust your current medications

    Stop smoking

    Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding

  • Be sure to arrange for a friend or family member to drive you to and from surgery, and to stay with you the first night following surgery.

    Following completion of a facelift, a bandage might be placed around your face to minimize swelling and bruising. Small tubes may be present to draw off any excess blood or fluid.

    You will be given specific instructions on how to care for the surgical site and drains, medications to apply or take orally, specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your general health and when to follow up with Dr. Stacey.

    · No HOT or WARM compresses to the surgical area.

    · No COLD compresses to the surgical area.

    · 1-2 drains may be required. If asked, drainage amounts should be

    logged and taken to each postoperative visit for the surgeon to review.

    · DO NOT USE A HOT DRYER ON YOUR HAIR.

    · Keep your head elevated to approximately 45 degrees for the first week.

    · Use caution when eating as to not cause an excessive over-stretch. A liquid diet might be advised for the first couple of days. Then eat only foods that require minimal chewing.

    · No alcohol for 1 week after surgery.

    · Limit lifting, pulling, pushing and straining (including in the bathroom) for at least 10 days. Avoid bending over to pick things up from floor for 1 week.

    · If you experience dry eyes, you may use over the counter artificial tears; either drops or ointment. Do not use products like Visine.

    · You may shower/sponge bath 48 hrs. after surgery with assistance.

    · You will follow up with one of our nurses 1-3 days after surgery. You will

    follow up with Dr. Stacey if any concerns arise during this time

    otherwise you will see him at your 1 week post-op appointment.

    · Wear a compression garment for 1-2 weeks.

    Call the office if you experience:

    Severe pain not responding to the medications

    Excess swelling or swelling that is greater on one side than the other

    Significant changes in vision (anything more than mild blurring).

    A fever.
